The Government of Antigua and Barbuda has reaffirmed its commitment to expanding the University of the West Indies Five Islands Campus, advancing Phase 1 of the project and issuing a formal invitation to tender for construction works through the Ministry of Works.
The expansion will deliver a modern campus featuring new academic facilities, student accommodation, and a state-of-the-art indoor sports complex, supported by civil infrastructure designed to accommodate both current and future phases of development. Financing for the project has been secured through the Saudi Fund for Development.
Education Minister Daryll Matthew described the initiative as reaching beyond bricks and mortar. "This expansion is more than a construction project; it is a nation-building initiative that will empower generations of Antiguans and Barbudans with access to high-quality education right here at home," he said.
The Ministry of Works' call for qualified contractors marks the formal transition from the planning stage to execution. Officials say the project will enhance tertiary education access for citizens while also generating employment, stimulating economic activity, and strengthening the nation's long-term competitiveness.
The Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party welcomed the announcement, commending the Government's push to ensure that opportunity and progress reach every household across the twin-island nation.
