Dominican Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has conducted an on-the-ground assessment of communities severely impacted by weekend flooding and landslides, as authorities intensify response efforts in the wake of a destructive trough system. According to Antigua.news, Skerrit toured the areas of Antrizzle, Atkinson, the Kalinago Territory, and Castle Bruce, meeting directly with residents whose homes and livelihoods were disrupted by the severe weather event.
The trough system, which struck Dominica over the weekend, triggered widespread flooding and massive landslides, leaving a trail of destruction across multiple communities. Several homes were inundated with floodwaters, while others sustained structural damage as hillsides gave way under the pressure of persistent rainfall.
Residents described scenes of chaos, with floodwaters rushing through homes and debris strewn across affected areas. In some communities, access routes were temporarily cut off, complicating early response efforts.
During his walkthrough of the affected areas, Skerrit assured residents that the government is actively coordinating relief operations, including detailed damage assessments and the mobilisation of resources to support affected families.
"We are on the ground to ensure that no community is left behind," the Prime Minister said, adding that priority is being given to the most vulnerable households.
Emergency teams have since been deployed to assess the full extent of the damage. Efforts are also underway to restore access routes, clear debris, and provide immediate support to displaced residents.
Officials say the situation remains under close monitoring as recovery operations continue, with further assistance expected as damage assessments are completed.
