Prime Minister Gaston Browne has thrown his full weight behind Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP) candidate Lamin Newton, declaring that Newton has what it takes to one day lead the country as prime minister.
According to Antigua.news, Browne made the remarks during a meet-and-greet event in the All Saints East and St Luke constituency on Monday night, days ahead of the April 30 general elections.
Newton is challenging Jamale Pringle of the United Progressive Party (UPP) for the seat — a constituency widely regarded as a traditional opposition stronghold. Browne, however, told supporters that Newton represents a new generation of leadership within the ABLP, citing the candidate's potential, capability, and readiness for higher office.
The prime minister's endorsement signals the party's broader ambition to flip key opposition-held seats as campaigning enters its final stretch before polling day.
Newton, for his part, made a direct appeal to residents, arguing that it is time for a change, stating that the constituency's current representative has done nothing for the community.
