Prime Minister Gaston Browne has announced plans to significantly expand Antigua and Barbuda's national housing programme, with a target of delivering between 2,000 and 3,000 additional homes in the next term of government.
According to Antigua News Room, Browne stated that his administration has already built or supported the construction of more than 4,000 homes through a combination of direct development and subsidy initiatives.
"National Housing would have built well in excess of 1,500 homes, and when you add those of CHAPA, over 2,000 homes were built by our government," Browne said. "When you add those that have been subsidized using the CABI programme, over 4,000 homes would have been built and/or subsidized by my administration."
The Prime Minister described the initiative as part of a broader effort to expand home ownership and raise living standards across the country.
Looking ahead, Browne outlined plans to scale up construction considerably. "We expect to do at least maybe 2,000, 3,000 homes," he said.
To support the accelerated pace of construction, Browne indicated that additional labour will be sourced from the Dominican Republic to help meet output targets and reduce timelines.
The housing drive forms part of the government's wider development strategy, which encompasses continued investment in infrastructure, social programmes, and economic opportunities. Browne emphasised that increasing access to property ownership is central to the administration's long-term vision for economic stability.
"At the end of the day, it's about improving the living standards of the people," he said.
