Prime Minister Gaston Browne has written to United States President Donald J. Trump, condemning the armed incident that occurred during the White House Correspondents' Association Dinner on Saturday evening and expressing relief that the President was unharmed.
In the letter, dated April 27, 2026, Browne extended the sentiments of the Government and people of Antigua and Barbuda to President Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, and all those present at the event.
"We strongly condemn this act of violence," Browne wrote. "No grievance or political difference can ever justify the use of arms against democratic institutions, elected leaders, members of the press, or citizens gathered in the exercise of free expression."
The Prime Minister reaffirmed Antigua and Barbuda's commitment to democratic principles, stating that democracy must be defended through law, reasoned debate, respect for institutions, and peaceful civic conduct. He was unequivocal that violence has no place in public life.
Browne also praised the United States law enforcement officers who responded to the incident, commending their courage and swift action, which he said prevented a far greater tragedy. He asked President Trump to convey best wishes for the full and speedy recovery of an officer injured during the incident.
The letter closed with an expression of solidarity from Antigua and Barbuda with the President, the Government, and the people of the United States.
