Dr. Jodi Bianca Callwood has made history as the first Antiguan and the first Caribbean national under the SMART Scholarship programme to earn a doctorate in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology, according to Antigua Observer.
The achievement marks a significant milestone for Antigua and Barbuda, placing one of its own at the forefront of a rapidly advancing scientific field that sits at the intersection of biology, computer science, and data analysis.
Dr. Callwood's work focuses specifically on plant science, where bioinformatics and computational biology are used to study plant systems at the genetic level. Research in this area directly supports progress in crop production, food security, and environmental resilience — challenges of growing global importance.
