A humanitarian campaign is underway in Antigua and Barbuda urging residents and businesses to contribute cash and essential medical supplies to Cuban hospitals facing critical shortages. According to Antigua.news, the initiative has a deadline of Saturday, May 9.
Organiser James Knight says the campaign, themed "A Friend Indeed is Now a Friend in Need," reflects the long-standing ties between Antigua and Barbuda and Cuba, particularly in the areas of healthcare and education.
Members of the public are invited to donate by cash or cheque, made payable to Williams and Associates Dental Ltd. Contributions can be dropped off in person at the Williams and Associates Dental Clinic at Deanery, where official receipts will be issued. The clinic will receive donations on weekdays between 8:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., and on Saturdays until 12:00 noon.
Knight says all funds raised will be directed toward the procurement of urgently needed medical supplies for Cuban hospitals, many of which continue to face persistent shortages.
"This is a moment for compassion and solidarity," the appeal states, calling on citizens to give generously in recognition of Cuba's historical support to Antigua and Barbuda and the broader Caribbean region.
The campaign draws particular attention to Cuba's longstanding medical brigade programme, which has supported healthcare systems across the Caribbean for decades. Organisers say the drive is an opportunity for Antiguans and Barbudans to give back to a nation that has consistently offered assistance in times of need.
Organisers are encouraging wide participation, emphasising that even modest contributions can make a meaningful impact. "HAVE A HEART! Give as willingly as you've been given," the appeal concludes.
