A shark spotted near the shoreline at Ffryes Beach on Sunday sent swimmers scrambling from the water, triggering a mix of alarm and curiosity among beachgoers enjoying the typically calm coastal waters. According to Antigua.news, the marine animal was observed moving slowly just beyond the shallows before eventually departing the area without incident.
Eyewitnesses reported that several swimmers quickly exited the water upon spotting the shark, while others held their ground at a safe distance, watching the unusual encounter unfold.
"It was a bit scary at first because you don't expect to see that so close," one beachgoer said. "But at the same time, it was interesting — people were pointing, recording, trying to figure out what kind of shark it was."
Some individuals gathered along the shoreline, capturing videos and photographs of the animal, while others urged caution and called for swimmers further out to return to shore.
No injuries were reported, and the shark moved away from the area without further incident.
While shark sightings in Antiguan waters are rare, marine experts note that such encounters can occur, particularly in areas where fish activity is elevated. Authorities typically advise beachgoers to remain calm, avoid sudden movements, and exit the water safely if a shark is spotted nearby.
The incident quickly became a talking point among both visitors and residents, serving as a vivid reminder of the unpredictable nature of marine life lurking just beyond the shoreline.
