Motorists across Antigua and Barbuda descended on gas stations in large numbers on Sunday as the nation braced for a massive island-wide motorcade ahead of the April 30 general election. According to Antigua.news, the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party is footing the bill for the event, citing party sources.
From early morning, vehicles formed lengthy queues along major roads leading into service stations, with some drivers reporting wait times exceeding one hour. The rush was tied directly to preparations for the ABLP's highly anticipated 'megacade,' expected to draw thousands of supporters.
The surge in demand created significant congestion across several communities, with traffic backing up in and around busy commercial areas as motorists competed for pump access. Some stations temporarily ran low on certain fuel grades, compounding delays and frustration for those in line.
The motorcade is being organised as a major show of political strength, with the route set to traverse multiple constituencies. Organisers have encouraged widespread participation from supporters travelling in private vehicles, buses, and trucks.
Drivers at the pumps told reporters the rush was motivated not only by a desire to participate in the event but also by concerns over potential fuel shortages later in the day.
Gas station attendants worked steadily throughout the morning to manage the elevated demand. In some locations, traffic management measures were put in place to maintain order and ensure public safety.
