The Antigua and Barbuda Electoral Commission has reminded business owners and the general public that the sale and distribution of alcohol will be strictly prohibited during polling hours on Election Day, in accordance with national law.
According to Antigua News Room, the Commission issued a public notice ahead of the 2026 general elections citing Section 27 of the Representation of the People Act (Cap. 379). That provision bars the sale, offering for sale, or free distribution of intoxicating liquor at any licensed premises within a constituency while polls remain open.
The restriction takes effect from the opening of polls and remains in force until their close on Election Day. Authorities stated the measure is designed to maintain order and uphold the integrity of the voting process.
The Commission warned that any person found in breach of the law commits an offence and may face penalties upon summary conviction. Those penalties include a fine of up to EC$3,000, imprisonment for up to 12 months, or both.
The Electoral Commission is calling on business operators and the wider public to comply fully with the regulations, stressing that adherence is essential to ensuring a smooth and lawful electoral process.
