The Antigua and Barbuda Electoral Commission (ABEC) has issued a firm warning to businesses and the public ahead of the 2026 General Elections: alcohol sales will be strictly prohibited on polling day, April 30.
According to Antigua.news, ABEC's directive is grounded in Section 27 of the Representation of the People Act (Cap. 379), which forbids the sale, offer for sale, or distribution of intoxicating liquor at any licensed premises within any constituency while polls are open.
The restriction covers the full duration of voting hours and is designed to preserve order, discipline, and the integrity of the electoral process.
Authorities made clear that violations will carry serious legal consequences. Any individual found in breach of the law faces a fine of up to EC$3,000 and imprisonment of up to 12 months upon summary conviction.
ABEC is calling on bar owners, shopkeepers, and vendors to comply fully with the directive. The Commission also reminded voters to conduct themselves responsibly throughout the electoral period.
Officials say the alcohol prohibition forms part of broader efforts to ensure a peaceful, fair, and orderly voting environment across Antigua and Barbuda on General Election day.
