A letter published by Antigua News Room raises sharp criticism of the United Progressive Party's recently launched manifesto, warning that its promises could lead to significant tax increases, public sector job losses, and a growing national debt burden.

According to Antigua News Room, the letter's author describes the UPP manifesto launch as "underwhelming" and argues that a closer examination of its contents reveals proposals that are fiscally dangerous. Among the items singled out for criticism is a proposed entertainment and sports complex, which the letter characterises as a "fairy tale" idea that would cost billions to build and maintain. Promised pay increases are also described as irresponsible and equally costly.

The letter outlines three possible ways the UPP could finance its pledges, none of which the author views favourably. The first option, according to the letter, is tax increases — including a potential rise in the Antigua and Barbuda Sales Tax, the reintroduction of a personal income tax, and higher fees on vehicles and imports.

The second option presented is spending cuts. The author warns these could take the form of public servant layoffs, reductions to pensions, cuts to unemployment benefits, and scaled-back investment in road construction and affordable housing.

The third financing route identified is increased borrowing. The letter argues that higher debt would progressively erode the government's ability to fund public services and invest in the country, as a growing share of tax revenue would be directed toward debt servicing.

The author concludes by describing the UPP manifesto — which the letter dubs a "ChatGPT Manifesto" — as not only a "joke" but a genuinely dangerous policy document, and suggests the UPP is not a credible choice for government.
