Antigua and Barbuda joined fellow Small Island Developing States (SIDS) at the United Nations Headquarters to celebrate the inaugural International SIDS Day, according to Antigua News Room. The event, held on the eve of the official observance, brought together island nations to highlight their shared challenges and cultural identities on a global stage.
With the support of UNESCO, Antigua and Barbuda participated in showcasing its rich cultural heritage while drawing renewed attention to the country's ongoing efforts to advance sustainable economic development. The nation also used the occasion to highlight the disproportionate impacts of climate change on small island states.
Several members of the Antigua and Barbuda Permanent Mission played a central role in representing the country at the event. Counsellor Glentis Thomas, First Secretary Asha Challenger, Second Secretary Dr. Jerri-anne Jeremy, and Attaché and Executive Assistant Jackley Peters were each recognised for their leadership in presenting Antigua and Barbuda to the international community. The U.S. office of the Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority also contributed to the delegation's efforts, helping to bring the nation's culture and vibrancy to the proceedings.
On this first observance of International SIDS Day, Antigua and Barbuda reaffirmed its commitment to championing climate resilience, protecting the country's natural and cultural assets, and advocating for the unique needs of island nations. The country expressed solidarity with the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS) in these ongoing efforts.
