Dr. Jodi Bianca Callwood has made history by earning a Doctor of Philosophy in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology from Iowa State University — a landmark achievement for Antigua and Barbuda and the wider Caribbean region.
According to Antigua News Room, Dr. Callwood is among the first Antiguans to attain a doctoral degree in this highly specialised field, and is also among the Black women at Iowa State University to reach this academic milestone in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology.
Dr. Callwood is the daughter of Carlene Spencer-Callwood of Glanvilles Village and the granddaughter of the late Cortwright (Dex) Spencer of Potters Village and the late educator Audrey Spencer.
Bioinformatics and computational biology — particularly within plant science — merges biology, computer science, and data analysis to examine plant systems at the genetic level. Research in this field directly supports advances in crop production, food security, and environmental resilience.
Dr. Callwood's path to her doctorate reflects considerable perseverance. She began school at age five before being homeschooled from age seven, during which she advanced rapidly through dedicated instruction. She later entered formal schooling at age 13, where she developed a strong interest in science and mathematics.
Her academic journey includes a Bachelor of Science in Bioengineering from Walla Walla University, a summer internship at Cornell University, and a Master of Science from Delaware State University. She completed her doctoral studies as a SMART Scholar, graduating entirely debt-free.
Beyond her academic accomplishments, Dr. Callwood is a competitive swimmer, a certified lifeguard, and an avid gamer. She has accepted a civilian position with the United States Navy, where she is expected to contribute to scientific research and national service.
Her achievement serves as a powerful inspiration to young people across Antigua and the broader Caribbean. Her brother, Julian, is also nearing completion of his own PhD.
The community has extended heartfelt congratulations to Dr. Callwood on this remarkable accomplishment.
