The Antigua and Barbuda Electoral Commission has issued a formal notice reminding employers of their legal obligation to provide workers with paid time off to vote during the 2026 general elections.
According to Antigua News Room, the reminder draws attention to Section 34(1) of the Representation of the People (Amendment) Act 2001, which requires every employer to grant each voter four consecutive hours to cast their ballot on polling day.
The law is explicit on the matter of compensation: employers are prohibited from deducting pay or imposing any penalty on employees who take this time to exercise their right to vote.
The provision is designed to ensure that all eligible voters have a fair and equal opportunity to participate in the democratic process, irrespective of their work schedules or employment obligations.
