The Department of Environment hosted a formal handover ceremony for solar energy kits donated by the People's Republic of China, aimed at supporting low-income and vulnerable households across Antigua and Barbuda. According to Antigua News Room, the initiative forms part of the Government's broader commitment to sustainable development, climate resilience, and improved quality of life for its citizens.
Delivering the feature address, Minister of Health, Wellness, Environment and Civil Service Affairs, Sir Molwyn Joseph underscored the importance of renewable energy in strengthening community resilience and reducing energy insecurity. He described the distribution of solar kits as a tangible step toward integrating climate-smart technologies into national social support systems.
Minister Joseph also highlighted a technical training component built into the project, designed to build local capacity in the installation, maintenance, and management of solar energy systems — an element he said is critical to ensuring the initiative's long-term sustainability and effectiveness.
Mr. Wang Baolong, Representative of Hengtianyuan Lighting Group of China — the implementing agency for the Climate Change Assistance Project — also addressed the ceremony, reaffirming his company's commitment to providing Antigua and Barbuda with reliable and sustainable energy solutions.
Her Excellency Jiang Wei, Ambassador of the People's Republic of China to Antigua and Barbuda, spoke to the strength and endurance of the bilateral partnership between both nations. She stated that the donation reflects China's continued support for Antigua and Barbuda's climate adaptation efforts and its broader sustainable development agenda.
The ceremony concluded with the signing of the Handover Certificate by Ambassador Jiang Wei and Sir Molwyn Joseph, formally transferring the solar kits to the Government and people of Antigua and Barbuda.
The solar kits are expected to provide clean, reliable energy to households that may otherwise struggle to access consistent electricity, improving living conditions while contributing to national efforts to reduce carbon emissions.
The Ministry expressed sincere appreciation to the Government and people of the People's Republic of China and Hengtianyuan Lighting Group for their partnership and contribution to the country's sustainable energy goals.
