ABLP Candidate Proposes Bolands–Jennings Bridge to Boost Access and Economy

ABLP candidate for St. Mary's South, Dwayne George, is proposing the construction of a bridge linking Bolands and Jennings, a move he says would significantly improve transportation, emergency access and economic activity in the constituency. According to Antigua News Room, George outlined the proposal during an ABS "Know Your Candidate" interview.

George pointed to the absence of a direct route between the two communities, noting that residents currently depend on longer, indirect roadways to travel between key parts of the constituency.

"I can remember as a child, we used to walk from Bowlands to Jennings… so I think that we need a bridge between Jennings and Bowlands to connect the two," George said.

The candidate is framing the project as both an infrastructure upgrade and an economic enabler. He argued that the link could ease movement for taxi operators and improve access to nearby tourism zones, particularly those closer to Jolly Harbour and the southwest coast.

George also highlighted the bridge's potential as an emergency alternative route, suggesting it could serve as a critical diversion during road closures or traffic disruptions along existing corridors.

Beyond transport, George tied the proposal to broader development across the constituency, where fishing, agriculture and tourism form key pillars of the local economy. Improved connectivity, he argued, would support these sectors by reducing travel time and expanding access between communities.

However, George did not provide details on estimated costs, a timeline, or whether the bridge forms part of any existing national infrastructure plan. Questions of feasibility — including environmental considerations and funding sources — also remain unanswered.

The proposal revives a long-standing historical connection between the two communities, once navigated on foot by residents, but now largely inaccessible by direct vehicular route.

With the April 30 general election approaching, the bridge proposal adds to a growing slate of constituency-focused commitments, placing infrastructure and mobility at the centre of George's campaign platform.
