A third fire broke out at the Cook's Sanitary Landfill on Sunday, April 19, raising fresh concerns about recurring flare-ups at the facility. According to Antigua Observer, the latest blaze is the third to be reported at the site within recent weeks.
Danley Phillip, Chairman of the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA), confirmed that the most recent fire occurred in a separate section of the landfill, one that poses particular challenges in terms of access. "Yeah, this is a separate area," Phillip stated, as reported by Antigua Observer.
The repeated occurrence of fires at Cook's Sanitary Landfill has drawn growing concern from officials and the public alike. The fact that the latest incident involved a difficult-to-reach section of the site adds another layer of complexity to efforts to contain and investigate the blazes.
Authorities have not yet indicated what is causing the repeated fires, and it remains unclear what measures are being taken to prevent further incidents at the landfill.
