The Medical Association of Antigua and Barbuda Inc. (MAAB) has paid tribute to Sir Dr. Cuthwin Lennard Lake, C.B.E., F.R.C.S., describing him as a transformative figure in the nation's healthcare system following his passing.

In an official statement, the MAAB extended its deepest sympathies to the family, friends, and colleagues of Dr. Lake, while reflecting on the breadth of his contributions to medicine in Antigua and Barbuda.

"He was someone who didn't just practice medicine but built the systems and institutions that allow others to practice it today," the association said.

The MAAB described Dr. Lake as far more than a surgeon, calling him a pioneer who represented the very essence of progress in the nation's healthcare system. His legacy spans clinical excellence, administrative leadership, and institution-building.

During the 1990s, Dr. Lake served as Medical Superintendent of Holberton Hospital, guiding the facility through a period of significant transformation. He also served as Chief of Surgery, where he upheld the highest standards of surgical care and mentored a generation of Caribbean physicians.

Beyond his clinical work, Dr. Lake is credited with helping construct the institutional frameworks within which medical practitioners in Antigua and Barbuda operate today.

The statement was issued by the MAAB Executive Team for the 2026–2028 term, which described his impact on the nation's medical landscape as immeasurable. "His loss is felt deeply by all who strive to uphold the excellence he championed," the association concluded.
