The Medical Association of Antigua and Barbuda Inc. (MAAB) is mourning the passing of Dr Sir Cuthwin Lake, honouring him as a pioneering force in the nation's healthcare system. According to Antigua.news, Dr Lake died on Monday night at the Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre at the age of 96.
In a formal statement, the MAAB executive paid tribute to the veteran surgeon, describing him as "more than a surgeon; he was a pioneer who represented the very essence of progress in our healthcare system."
Dr Lake's long and distinguished medical career left a lasting imprint on Antigua and Barbuda's health sector. He served as Medical Superintendent of Holberton Hospital during the 1990s, a period of significant institutional transformation. The MAAB credited his leadership with modernising hospital operations and improving the delivery of patient care.
He also held the position of Chief of Surgery, where colleagues widely respected him for maintaining the highest standards of surgical practice. Beyond his clinical work, Dr Lake served as a mentor, guiding a generation of Caribbean doctors who went on to serve across the region.
The MAAB said his contribution to medicine in Antigua and Barbuda was immeasurable. "His impact on the medical landscape of Antigua and Barbuda is immeasurable, and his loss is felt deeply by all who strive to uphold the excellence he championed," the association's statement read.
