A fire broke out at the Cook's Sanitary Landfill on Sunday, April 19, 2026, at approximately 10:00 p.m., according to Antigua News Room. The National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) confirmed the incident and says efforts to fully extinguish the blaze remain ongoing.
The affected section of the landfill stored white goods, electronics, and old vehicles — materials that make containment particularly difficult. The site continues to smolder, with fumes persisting as a result.
The NSWMA publicly thanked the Antigua and Barbuda Fire Department for its swift response in bringing the fire under control. The Authority also issued an apology to surrounding communities for the disruption and the resulting deterioration in air quality.
Residents with respiratory ailments are urged to remain indoors or take appropriate precautions until conditions improve.
