Dear Editor,

I originally had no intention of weighing in on the politics of St. Paul, but two developments have compelled me to comment on Alan Weston's independent candidacy, as reported by Antigua News Room.

As a born Antiguan, I have long harboured deep concerns about what I see as the increasing foreign takeover of English Harbour. Now, it appears, those same foreign interests are reaching into our politics.

At a time when we as a people are actively fighting for reparations, it troubles me greatly that what I can only describe as a slavery mentality seems to have returned.

I have passed Weston's campaign office on Dockyard Drive on several occasions. On each visit, a white foreigner appears to be running operations there. Who is this individual? Does he hold a valid work permit or permanent residency status? This is the same person who reportedly sought to take over the Sailing Academy for his own commercial purposes. When that bid was denied, he appears to have instead chosen to financially back a local candidate to challenge the system from within.

I would not dare interfere in his country — the very country that gave the world apartheid-era Afrikaners in South Africa.

I am attaching photographs to demonstrate who is truly behind Weston's campaign. Notably, at least one CIP passport holder flew into Antigua specifically to serve as one of the persons nominating Weston — and seemingly only because they hold influence over him.

The second matter that deeply offended me was a remark made by Eli Fuller, who described Weston as brave and a patriot.

Brave? Patriotic? To the highest bidder, after selling out his birthright? I would ask Mr. Fuller to reconsider how he defines those words.

Weston's grandfather, the late John Meade — a devoted ALP stalwart and right-hand man to the iconic VC Bird — must surely be spinning in his grave.
