A fire broke out at Cook's Sanitary Landfill late Tuesday evening, prompting the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) to issue a public advisory. According to Antigua News Room, the blaze began at approximately 10:00 p.m. and authorities are actively working to extinguish it.
The NSWMA has extended its apologies to surrounding communities for the disruption caused, particularly the deterioration in air quality resulting from the fire. Residents with respiratory ailments are strongly advised to remain indoors or take appropriate precautionary measures until conditions improve.
Despite the ongoing fire, the landfill remains open to users, though the Authority is urging all visitors to proceed with caution. Should conditions worsen, the NSWMA has indicated it will issue a follow-up advisory.
The Authority also pledged to take steps to minimize the occurrence of hazardous incidents at the facility going forward.
