Attorney General Sir Steadroy "Cutie" Benjamin has committed to establishing the first law school in Antigua and Barbuda, enabling students to complete their full legal training locally rather than travelling abroad to qualify as attorneys.
According to Antigua.news, Benjamin outlined the initiative while speaking to the priorities contained in the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party's 2026–2031 manifesto. He stated that the proposed law school would serve not only Antiguan and Barbudan students but also students across the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS).
Benjamin drew on his own experience to underscore the urgency of the plan, citing the fact that he had been required to travel to England to complete his legal training. He said he was determined that young people in the country would not face those same obstacles.
The Attorney General described the law school as the logical next step in an ongoing progression to build tertiary education capacity at home. That progression, he noted, began with the establishment of a University of the West Indies campus in Antigua and continued most recently with the introduction of a law degree programme at the institution, set to begin this September.
Benjamin framed the broader initiative as part of a sustained effort to expand opportunities for qualified citizens within the twin-island nation.
