Two serious vehicular accidents occurring within a 24-hour period have prompted authorities to call for greater responsibility among motorists on Antigua's roads. According to Antigua Observer, the incidents — one in the Hatton community and another on All Saints Road — caused significant infrastructure damage and left residents without power for extended periods.
The first incident took place on Thursday in the Hatton community, where a truck travelling in a westerly direction collided with a utility pole. The crash resulted in damage to the pole and triggered a prolonged power outage for nearby residents.
A second collision, reported on All Saints Road, compounded concerns among authorities. As reported by Antigua Observer, investigators attributed the accidents to a combination of mechanical failure and driver negligence — factors that officials say are preventable with proper vehicle maintenance and adherence to road safety standards.
The back-to-back incidents have intensified calls from authorities for motorists to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy before taking to the streets. Officials also urged drivers to exercise greater caution, particularly on roads where utility infrastructure runs in close proximity to traffic lanes.
Residents affected by the resulting power outages expressed frustration over the disruptions. The damage to utility poles required crews to carry out repairs before power could be restored to impacted communities.
Authorities have not yet indicated whether any charges will be filed in connection with either incident, but the investigations remain ongoing.
