Prime Minister Gaston Browne has announced that Antigua and Barbuda will introduce free university education beginning September 2026 — earlier than previously anticipated.

According to Antigua News Room, Browne made the announcement during an appearance on Pointe FM, stating that following discussions with the Financial Secretary, free tertiary education at the University of the West Indies Five Islands Campus will now commence this year, rather than after the planned expansion of the campus as originally promised.

The Prime Minister confirmed that Antiguans and Barbudans will be able to pursue several degree programmes locally at no cost, including a law degree.

Browne also hinted at broader ambitions for education reform across all levels, noting that several related initiatives will be outlined in greater detail in the party's manifesto, which is set to be launched next week.

This is a developing story.
