Traffic police have ramped up enforcement against illegal parking in St John's, with motorists now facing an increased risk of fines as authorities move to address growing congestion in the capital. According to Antigua News Room, officers have been patrolling key areas and issuing tickets to drivers parked in no-parking zones, on sidewalks, and at blocked intersections.
The crackdown has been most visible along busy commercial streets, where multiple vehicles were ticketed within short periods during recent patrols. Authorities say the initiative is designed to ease traffic congestion and improve pedestrian safety amid mounting pressure on the city's road network.
Police say the enforcement push is particularly necessary during peak hours, when St John's experiences its heaviest congestion. Officers have warned that continued violations could lead to tougher consequences, including vehicle towing.
Not all road users are receptive to the measures, however. Some motorists contend that illegal parking is largely a symptom of an insufficient number of parking spaces in the capital, particularly during the daytime rush.
Despite those concerns, authorities are urging drivers to comply with traffic laws, emphasising that illegal parking disrupts traffic flow and creates hazards for other road users.
Police confirmed that heightened enforcement will continue in the coming days as part of ongoing efforts to bring order to the capital's streets.
