Thieves broke into the Ministry of Health, Wellness, Environment and Civil Service Affairs and made off with 30 laptops, dealing a significant blow to Antigua and Barbuda's efforts to modernise its healthcare infrastructure.
The break-in occurred at the Ministry's headquarters sometime between Monday, April 13 and Tuesday, April 14, 2026. The stolen devices — Dell Pro 16 PC16250 notebook computers — were donated by the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) to support upgrades to patient record systems across community clinics nationwide.
Health officials have warned that the loss could delay critical improvements to service delivery, particularly for vulnerable groups including children, the elderly, and individuals living with chronic illnesses.
The Ministry issued a statement expressing "deep outrage and profound disappointment" over the theft, describing the equipment as essential to strengthening frontline healthcare services. The matter has been reported to the Royal Police Force of Antigua and Barbuda, which has launched a full investigation.
Authorities are calling on members of the public to come forward with any information that could assist in recovering the stolen laptops. Officials are also cautioning the public against purchasing or possessing the devices, stressing that they remain the property of the Government of Antigua and Barbuda and are not authorised for sale. Anyone found in possession of the stolen equipment could face legal consequences.
The Ministry has confirmed it is reviewing its security protocols in the wake of the incident, while reaffirming its commitment to advancing healthcare delivery despite the setback.
Anyone with information is urged to contact the Royal Police Force of Antigua and Barbuda.
