Kelvin 'Shugy' Simon, the United Progressive Party's sitting Member of Parliament for St. Mary's South, says he is confident of holding the constituency in the April 30 general election, pointing to what he calls a strong bond with voters forged through consistent service and advocacy.
According to Antigua.news, Simon expressed certainty that constituents remain firmly behind him. "I have a special relationship with the people in St. Mary's South," Simon said. "As I interact with them on a daily basis, they continue to re-emphasise the confidence that they have in me."
Simon first claimed the seat in a 2023 by-election and will once again square off against Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party candidate Dwayne George, who has himself declared confidence in securing a victory.
Simon said the prospect of facing the same opponent in a general election does not unsettle him. He argued that voters in St. Mary's South are motivated by substance rather than party allegiance.
The incumbent MP highlighted his record in opposition, citing the advocacy and pressure he has applied to the government on behalf of the constituency. He pointed to work carried out alongside young people, schools, and the elderly, and singled out one achievement he described as unprecedented in the constituency's history.
Simon said his time in office has made clear to residents that his driving force is service, not personal gain.
