ST JOHN'S, Antigua — United Progressive Party (UPP) leader Jamale Pringle has promised to expand concessions on barrels and introduce a broad package of affordability measures if his party forms the next government. According to Antigua News Room, Pringle made the announcement at the party's campaign launch on Sunday night.
Pringle indicated that the existing limited barrel concession would be broadened to deliver more consistent relief to families struggling with rising food prices. The proposal was one of several affordability initiatives the opposition leader outlined, arguing that residents face mounting pressure from the cost of basic goods and services.
Among the key measures, Pringle announced a Water Tanks and Accessories Relief Program that would eliminate taxes on equipment used to store and access water. "We will take off all taxes on pumps, pressure tanks, water tanks," he said, describing the initiative as an interim solution "until we are able to deliver water to you on a regular basis."
Pringle also pledged to remove import duties on personal vehicles, framing the move as a step toward making transportation more affordable for ordinary Antiguans and Barbudans.
Speaking directly to supporters, he painted a broad picture of the relief his party intends to deliver. "Food you can buy. Roads that are fit to drive on. Vehicles you can afford without being bankrupt. Water in your taps when you turn them on. Healthcare when you and your family need it," he said.
Pringle positioned the proposals as a direct response to what he described as growing economic hardship under the current administration. He sought to underscore the seriousness of the commitments, telling supporters: "This is not a wish. This is a contract with the people of Antigua and Barbuda."
The announcements come as cost-of-living concerns take centre stage ahead of the April 30 general election, with both major parties competing to convince voters that their platforms offer the most credible path to economic relief and stability.
