The Government of Antigua and Barbuda will reintroduce its zero-rated Antigua and Barbuda Sales Tax (ABST) initiative in August, providing families with a tax-free shopping window on select items ahead of the new school term.
Prime Minister Gaston Browne confirmed the measure, which temporarily removes ABST from essential goods, will be timed to align with the start of the upcoming academic year.
Browne said the initiative forms part of the government's broader efforts to cushion the impact of rising living costs. He noted that authorities are continuing to monitor inflation trends and will adjust policies where necessary.
The tax-free period is expected to cover a range of school-related items and household essentials, offering temporary financial relief to parents as they prepare for the academic year — one of the most financially demanding periods for families.
The move builds on previous ABST relief periods introduced by the government and is designed to provide targeted support during a time when household expenses typically surge.
