A University of the West Indies Five Islands Campus researcher is calling on political candidates to engage voters through structured constituency debates in the lead-up to the 2026 general elections in Antigua and Barbuda.

According to Antigua Observer, Dr. Kwasi K. Tonge, a Social Science Researcher at the institution, is advocating for greater civic engagement through organised candidate debates held across constituencies nationwide.

As a resident of the St. Mary's North constituency, Dr. Tonge said he would particularly welcome a structured debate involving candidates contesting that seat, signalling that his call is rooted in both academic conviction and personal civic interest.

The push for candidate debates reflects broader concerns about voter engagement and democratic participation ahead of the next electoral cycle. Structured constituency debates are widely regarded as a means of holding candidates accountable and allowing voters to assess competing platforms directly.
