Prime Minister Gaston Browne has cast the upcoming general election as a decisive crossroads for Antigua and Barbuda — one that will determine whether the nation continues on its current path or reverts to what he described as a era of economic hardship.
According to Antigua News Room, Browne made the remarks while addressing a large crowd of supporters at the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP) campaign launch at People's Place, framing the April 30 vote as a "defining moment" for the country's future.
Browne contrasted his administration's record with that of the opposition, citing economic contraction and significant job losses in the period prior to 2014. He stated that approximately 10,000 jobs were lost during that time and warned voters against what he called a return to a "failed experiment."
The prime minister argued that his government has since restored employment, stabilized the economy and expanded opportunities, placing the country on stronger footing. He told supporters that the choice before them extends beyond politics and will shape the nation's long-term development.
"This election is not about retrogression. It is about progress… continued progress," Browne said.
Browne also questioned the opposition's readiness to govern, pointing to what he described as internal divisions within their ranks. He argued that strong, experienced leadership is essential given the current climate of global instability.
"This is not a time for experimentation… this is a time for stability, this is a time for competent leadership," he said.
The prime minister urged supporters to remain engaged and ensure they are prepared to cast their ballots, stressing the importance of voter participation in the democratic process.
The general election is scheduled for April 30. Nomination Day is set for April 13.
