Prime Minister Gaston Browne has announced a snap general election for April 30, setting the stage for an intense campaign season well ahead of the constitutional deadline of 2028. According to Antigua.news, the announcement was made at The People's Place during the official launch of the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party's (ABLP) "Big Red Machine" campaign, where thousands of supporters gathered in a sea of red.
Nomination Day is set for April 13, and the day following the election — May 1 — has been declared a public holiday by Browne.
Addressing the large crowd, Browne said the decision to call early elections was rooted in confidence and momentum built over his time in office. "We are ready," he declared, framing the early poll as a reflection of the administration's steady progress and national transformation.
Central to the ABLP's re-election pitch is its economic record, particularly its management of recovery following the COVID-19 pandemic. The government has pointed to a strong tourism rebound, increased airlift capacity, and renewed investor confidence as key markers of that recovery.
Major infrastructure works also feature prominently in the party's campaign narrative. These include road rehabilitation projects across the island, upgrades to V.C. Bird International Airport, and continued investment in affordable housing developments.
In Barbuda, the administration has advanced land development and tourism-related projects, which officials say are designed to generate employment and stimulate economic activity on the sister isle.
Browne also highlighted the government's focus on social empowerment, citing expanded scholarship opportunities, skills training programmes, and small business support measures introduced during and after the pandemic. Increases to pension benefits and public sector wages in recent years were presented as further evidence of the administration's commitment to citizens, though critics have raised concerns about long-term fiscal sustainability.
Healthcare improvements have also featured in the ABLP's record, with investments in the Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre, expanded services, and ongoing plans to strengthen primary healthcare delivery. The government has additionally pursued the digitization of public services and modernization of operations across ministries.
On the international stage, Browne's administration has been active in regional diplomacy and global advocacy, particularly on climate change, small island vulnerability, and financial access. The country's preparations to host the 2026 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) have been highlighted as evidence of Antigua and Barbuda's growing global profile.
"We have laid a strong foundation, but there is more work to be done," Browne told supporters at the campaign launch.
With the election date confirmed, attention is expected to shift quickly to the opposition's response as both major parties move into full campaign mode in what is shaping up to be a closely watched national contest.
