Businessman and social commentator Eli Fuller has predicted that independent candidates will contest the next general election, arguing that mounting public frustration with the political landscape could open doors in several constituencies.
According to Antigua News Room, Fuller made the remarks during a Facebook Live video, in which he also clarified that a recent post suggesting he would run as an independent candidate in St. Mary's South was an April Fool's joke — though one rooted in genuine concern about the need for alternative voices in Antiguan politics.
"It was a joke, but also a protest," Fuller said, adding that a growing number of citizens are disillusioned with both major political parties.
Fuller expressed confidence that at least one independent candidate will formally enter the race, and suggested that others could follow, particularly in areas where voters feel underrepresented by the existing political establishment.
He singled out St. Mary's South as a constituency where an independent candidate could gain meaningful traction, pointing to rapid development in the area and what he described as insufficient oversight and advocacy on behalf of residents.
While acknowledging that independent candidates have historically struggled to secure seats in Antigua and Barbuda, Fuller argued that the current political climate may offer a different kind of opportunity.
"This election is going to be different," he said, expressing hope that at least one independent candidate could break through.
Fuller was clear that he does not intend to run for office at this time, stating that his focus remains on his business, family and personal commitments. He did not, however, rule out the possibility of entering politics at some point in the future.
He called on individuals willing to "think outside the box" and place national interests above party loyalty to consider standing for public office, arguing that such candidates could challenge the status quo and broaden political representation across the country.
