The Antiguan government is closely monitoring the welfare of Antiguan and Barbudan students currently studying in Cuba, as concerns over conditions on the island continue. According to Antigua News Room, Director General of Communications Maurice Merchant confirmed that officials are maintaining regular contact with the students and providing support where needed.
"We continue to be in touch with our students in Cuba to assess on a weekly basis… their current situation," Merchant said.
Merchant noted that the government has already taken concrete steps to assist students facing difficulties, including the provision of financial assistance and the issuance of practical recommendations to help them manage ongoing challenges.
"The government has already come in and provided financial assistance to them," he said.
Looking ahead, Merchant indicated that contingency plans are being developed in coordination with regional partners should conditions in Cuba deteriorate further. "There are contingency plans in place… along with our OECS partners in the event of different scenarios," he said.
Despite the hardships, Merchant stressed that the students remain determined to see their studies through. "They intend to complete their studies once the conditions allow them to do so," he said.
Officials confirmed that monitoring and support efforts will continue as the government maintains its broader response to the situation.
