An 18-year-old has been charged with the murder of 33-year-old Rodney Piper, more than two years after Piper was fatally beaten following a dispute over a stolen phone, according to Antigua News Room.
Piper, a resident of Golden Grove, was attacked on 9 September 2023 after he confronted a group he believed had stolen his phone. The assault left him with severe injuries and in a coma.
He was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit at the Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre, where he died eight days later on 17 September 2023. A coroner's jury subsequently ruled his death a murder.
As reported by Antigua News Room, the accused was charged in March of this year. Although he is now 18, he was a minor at the time of the alleged offence and is therefore being treated as such under the law.
He was initially remanded in custody following his charge but was later granted bail by the High Court on 1 April.
