Social work professionals are calling on the public to seek assistance early, before personal or family situations escalate into full-blown crises.
According to Antigua Observer, the appeal was made during an appearance on Observer AM in recognition of Social Workers Awareness Month. Dr. Anthony Estreet, Chief Executive Officer of the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) in the United States, addressed what he described as one of the most damaging misconceptions surrounding the social work profession.
Dr. Estreet indicated that a widespread misunderstanding leads many people to delay reaching out for support until their circumstances have already deteriorated significantly. Social workers, he stressed, are equipped to assist individuals and families at any stage — not only in moments of acute distress.
The awareness campaign aims to shift public perception of social work services and encourage communities to view professional support as a proactive resource rather than a last resort. Practitioners in the field say early intervention can prevent situations from worsening and lead to better long-term outcomes for those involved.
As reported by Antigua Observer, the initiative coincides with Social Workers Awareness Month, a period dedicated to highlighting the vital role social work professionals play in communities across the region and beyond.
