The Antigua and Barbuda Electoral Commission (ABEC) has convened a high-level meeting with Returning Officers from all 17 constituencies as part of its formal preparations for the upcoming General Elections, scheduled for Wednesday, April 1, 2026. According to Antigua News Room, the meeting was held at the Commission's headquarters and forms a central component of ABEC's strategic effort to deliver a transparent, efficient, and credible electoral process.
The session brought together Returning Officers to review electoral procedures, reinforce operational guidelines, and address key logistical and administrative matters ahead of polling day.
Commission Chairman Arthur G.B. Thomas stressed the weight of responsibility carried by Returning Officers in upholding democratic integrity. "You have been appointed at a critical juncture in our democratic process. Elections are not merely administrative exercises; they are the institutional expression of the sovereign will of the people. As Returning Officers, you stand at the operational core of that process. The legitimacy of the electoral outcome and, by extension, public confidence in our democratic institutions — depends in no small measure on your conduct," he said.
Ambassador Thomas further affirmed that "the Commission remains committed to upholding the democratic principles that guide free and fair elections in Antigua and Barbuda."
Supervisor of Elections Ian S. Hughes echoed those sentiments, emphasising the importance of strict adherence to established protocols. "It is imperative that all Returning Officers are aligned with the Commission's standards and procedures," Hughes stated. "Today's meeting provided an opportunity to clarify expectations, address potential challenges, and reinforce the importance of accuracy, accountability, and transparency at every stage of the electoral process."
On Thursday, April 2, 2026, the 17 Returning Officers were officially sworn in by Chief Magistrate Ngaio Emanuel at the Magistrate Court.
ABEC says it continues to engage stakeholders and implement measures aimed at ensuring the General Elections are conducted in a manner that inspires public confidence and reflects the will of the people.
