ST. JOHN'S, Antigua and Barbuda — The Census Office has announced the temporary suspension of field operations for the 2025 Population and Housing Census, citing the pending general elections as the primary reason for the pause. According to Antigua News Room, the decision was made to protect the integrity and neutrality of both the electoral process and the census.
The Census Office stated that both activities carry significant national importance and demand substantial logistical coordination, public engagement, and the full attention of all relevant stakeholders. Officials determined that running both operations concurrently would risk compromising the smooth execution of each.
Effective immediately, all field activities — including household visits and in-person data collection — have been paused. Enumerators and field staff have been directed to stand down from active duty. Internal administrative and preparatory work, however, will continue where necessary during the suspension period.
The Census Office moved to reassure the public that the halt is temporary. Plans are already being developed to resume field operations as soon as practicable following the conclusion of the elections, with updated timelines and further details to be communicated in due course.
The Census Office called on residents to remain cooperative and patient, emphasising that the success of the Population and Housing Census depends on continued public support. The office reaffirmed its commitment to delivering a comprehensive and accurate account of the nation's population and housing characteristics.
