Prime Minister Gaston Browne has levelled sharp criticism at two United Progressive Party (UPP) candidates, asserting that both lack grassroots presence and meaningful engagement with voters in their respective constituencies.

According to Antigua News Room, Browne made the remarks in a video circulating online, singling out UPP candidate Malaka Parker in Rural North and Ashworth Azille in Rural East.

"Malika Parker, for example, nobody in rural North knows her," Browne said. He further claimed she has "not started a campaign" and has "no physical presence in rural North," suggesting that many constituents would be unable to identify her if asked.

Browne directed similar criticism at Azille, the UPP's candidate for Rural East, saying he too has failed to connect with voters on the ground. The prime minister stated that Azille has "no presence—neither physical nor otherwise," and that attempts to canvass communities were met with resistance from residents who said they did not recognise him.

Browne added that the reaction from residents appeared to have discouraged Azille, noting that the candidate has not been seen since and is "not ready for prime time."

While distancing himself from what he described as disparaging remarks reportedly made by some residents during those canvassing encounters, Browne said the incidents reflect a broader disconnect between the opposition candidates and the voters they are seeking to represent.
