Alex Browne has returned to the Senate of Antigua and Barbuda, just weeks after his defeat in the March 16, 2026, by-election in St. Philip North. According to Antigua News Room, Browne was sworn in this morning, pledging to "faithfully bear true allegiance to the State of Antigua and Barbuda, its Constitution and laws."
Browne lost the by-election to ABLP candidate Randy Baltimore in what was described as a crushing defeat. Despite the loss, he was welcomed back to the Senate chamber with congratulations from colleagues on both sides of the aisle.
Not all the well-wishes were without reservation, however. Senator Philip Shoul, while congratulating Browne, expressed hope that the opposition would appoint a younger senator, in keeping with the United Progressive Party's stated commitment to placing more young people in its leadership structure.
This is not Browne's first stint in the Senate. He was previously appointed by Opposition Leader Jamale Pringle following the 2023 general election, after a strong showing against veteran politician Sir Robin Yearwood — who retired this month after a distinguished 50-year parliamentary career.
Browne's return to the Senate is unlikely to be a long one. He has already been named the UPP's candidate for St. Philip North in the upcoming general election, where he will once again face Baltimore. That election is expected to be held later this month.
