A mother still mourning the loss of her daughter has penned a heartfelt open letter calling on Antiguan authorities to take urgent action in response to what she describes as a national crisis claiming the lives of the nation's youth.
According to Antigua News Room, the letter was written by Asabi Charles, who has now been living with grief for 586 days following the death of her daughter, Achazia James. Charles says the recent loss of more young people has reopened wounds that have never fully healed.
"These are not just headlines to me," Charles wrote. "These are children I knew, lives I saw growing, futures that once held promise. To witness such loss, one after the other, is deeply painful."
In her letter, Charles extended condolences to the families of the recently deceased, particularly to mothers now facing what she called "a reality no parent should ever have to endure."
She also took a moment to honour those lost before them, naming Yenifer Bridge, Achazia James, Brianna Clark, Omari Lewis, Chantel Crump, and Vonde Bowers among others. "These were not statistics," she wrote. "These were sons and daughters, students, friends — young people with dreams, with purpose, and with families who loved them deeply."
Charles directed an urgent appeal to the Royal Police Force of Antigua and Barbuda, the Attorney General, and other authorities entrusted with upholding justice. She called for answers, accountability, and justice, warning that unsolved cases breed fear, frustration, and a profound sense of abandonment within communities.
"It must never be accepted that our children's lives can be taken without consequence," she wrote.
Charles also addressed grieving families directly, urging them to know they are not alone. She called on the broader society not to grow numb to the pattern of loss unfolding in the country.
"This is not only my voice as a mother," Charles concluded. "This is a call on behalf of many."
Despite her grief, Charles said she continues to hold on to faith, expressing belief that justice will ultimately come.
