Cabinet has committed to approving a subsidy aimed at reducing the cost of airfare between Antigua and Barbuda, as concerns grow over the financial strain placed on residents travelling between the two islands. According to Antigua.news, the decision follows a presentation by Kendra Beazer, the newly appointed Barbuda caretaker for the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party.

Beazer outlined the mounting financial burden facing Barbudans due to rising ticket prices on the inter-island route. She pointed to recent fare hikes and limited transportation alternatives, warning that the situation is affecting daily travel, access to healthcare, economic activity, and the overall quality of life for residents of Barbuda.

Cabinet agreed that the matter requires urgent and meaningful intervention, stressing that affordable and reliable connectivity between the two islands is essential.

As a next step, Beazer has been instructed to prepare and submit a detailed proposal outlining how the subsidy would be structured and implemented. That proposal is expected to be reviewed at the next Cabinet sitting, where a final decision will be made.

The government stated that the planned subsidy reflects its commitment to improving accessibility and ensuring that Barbudans are not disproportionately burdened by the high cost of inter-island travel.
