A Herberts resident has been arrested and charged after police caught him smoking cannabis in a public area near a primary school, according to Antigua.news.

Jamie Darroux was taken into custody at approximately 1:30 p.m. on Monday, March 23, after officers from the Narcotics Department spotted him during a mobile patrol in the vicinity of Potters Primary School.

Police say officers observed Darroux smoking cannabis in a public space. He was subsequently apprehended and charged with smoking cannabis in a public place and possession of cannabis. Darroux is expected to appear before the court at a later date.

Authorities used the arrest to remind the public of the legal framework governing smoking in public spaces. Under the Tobacco Control Act, 2018, and the Misuse of Drugs (Amendment) Act, 2024, smoking tobacco or cannabis is prohibited in a wide range of public areas, including schools, workplaces, public transportation, restaurants, and government buildings.

Anyone found smoking cannabis in a public place — or allowing its use or distribution on such premises — can face a fine of up to EC$2,000 upon summary conviction.

The Police Administration is urging residents to comply with the law and refrain from engaging in illegal activities.
