The Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party will hold its upcoming convention with a clear mandate: to place the organisation on full electoral footing ahead of the next general election. According to Antigua News Room, the April 12 meeting will serve as the platform to finalise candidate selections and confirm outstanding party leadership positions.
Prime Minister Gaston Browne said the convention's primary purpose is to ensure every element of the party's machinery is operational and aligned. "We are now seeking to place the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party in a state of readiness," Browne stated, noting that while candidates have already been identified, the convention will formally ratify those selections.
Browne acknowledged that gaps remain in the party's internal structure ahead of the gathering. "We still have officers of the party who are not in place," he said, indicating the convention will resolve those outstanding appointments alongside the confirmation of the full candidate slate.
The Prime Minister revealed that the party executive has already recommended the final two candidates to complete the slate — Kendra Beazer for Barbuda and Philmore Benjamin for St Mary's North.
Browne characterised the convention's objectives as both administrative and strategic, positioning the ruling party to move swiftly once elections are officially called.
The April 12 meeting is expected to mark the ABLP's formal transition from internal organisation into full campaign mode as it prepares to contest the next general election.
