The Antigua and Barbuda Dental Association (ABDA) hosted a colourful and well-attended parade on Friday, March 20, 2026, marking World Oral Health Day with a community-wide celebration that brought together children, healthcare professionals, educators, and volunteers.
Carried under the theme "A Happy Mouth is a Happy Life," the event filled the streets with vibrant costumes, music, and enthusiastic participation. Students from the Sunny Smiles Program marched proudly alongside volunteers, carrying creative signs bearing messages such as "Floss Like a Boss" and "Healthy Smile, Healthy Life."
The Bon Appétit Drum Corps led the procession, followed by costumed characters including the popular Toothie mascot, practising dentists, coalition partners, volunteers, and medical students. Interactive photo frames were stationed along the route, offering participants and spectators a fun way to engage with the event's oral health messaging.
Dr. Dickenson-Foster, Chairman of the Day, reflected on the significance of the occasion. "This parade represents more than a celebration — it reflects our commitment to improving oral health awareness across Antigua and Barbuda. The level of community engagement, especially from our young people, was truly inspiring."
ABDA President Dr. Deborah Robinson-Akande echoed that sentiment. "We are incredibly proud of what was achieved. This initiative demonstrates the power of collaboration in promoting preventive care and healthy lifestyles. Our children are at the heart of this movement, and their enthusiasm reminds us why this work is so important."
The association acknowledged the contributions of several sponsors, including Lions Club International, Food Brokerage Services, and Billy's Food Mart. The Antigua and Barbuda Red Cross, represented by President Dr. Jose Humphreys and Mr. Ambrose, served as a key coalition partner, providing ambulance services, first responders, and general safety oversight throughout the event.
Additional support came from volunteers with the Ministry of Health and Antigua State College, as well as medical students from the University of Health Sciences Antigua. The institution's President, Dr. Adedayo Akande, and Dean, Dr. Francesca Jack, also participated in the parade.
The ABDA noted that this year's celebration underscores Antigua and Barbuda's expanding role in regional oral health promotion. The association reaffirmed its commitment to advancing the Sunny Smiles Program, which it says continues to make a measurable impact on children's health across the country.
