The Antigua and Barbuda Consulate General in New York has launched a new initiative aimed at strengthening ties with younger members of the country's diaspora and encouraging their active involvement in national development.
According to Antigua.news, the effort is led by Antigua and Barbuda's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Walton Webson, and targets first, second, and third-generation Antiguans and Barbudans living in the United States.
Webson stressed the importance of preserving cultural and national connections among younger generations, arguing that geographic distance must not erode their bond with their heritage. "It is our obligation to ensure the voices of our first, second and third generations are heard and that their ties to Antigua and Barbuda are preserved and strengthened for the future," he said.
As a centerpiece of the initiative, the Consulate will host its first Diaspora Networking Mixer in the northeastern United States. The event is designed to provide a platform for young nationals to engage with one another and with government representatives, while exploring ways to contribute to Antigua and Barbuda's social and economic growth.
The mixer is scheduled for Wednesday, March 25, at Jumeika Grand Restaurant on Lexington Avenue in New York, running from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Attendees will hear brief presentations and network with notable figures, including Chef Claude Lewis — a winner of the popular culinary competition Chopped and a national of Antiguan and Barbudan heritage — as well as Dean Fenton, the country's Director of Tourism for the United States.
Beyond the event itself, the Consulate aims to expand its database of young nationals living abroad, with a view to better engaging their skills and expertise in both diaspora and national initiatives.
Webson called the mixer a critical first step in building stronger relationships with the next generation. "This is the type of dialogue we need to foster so that we can better understand the needs of our young people and ensure they remain connected to Antigua and Barbuda," he said.
