The Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Service has issued a Tsunami Information Statement confirming there is no tsunami threat to the country following a 6.9 magnitude earthquake in the North Atlantic. According to Antigua News Room, the bulletin was released at 8:45 am AST on Saturday, March 21, 2026.
The earthquake struck the Northern Mid-Atlantic Ridge at 8:17 am AST, with its epicentre located at coordinates 23.8° North, 45.8° West — approximately 1,818 kilometres (1,130 miles) northeast of Antigua. The quake registered a preliminary depth of just 1 kilometre (0.6 miles).
Authorities evaluated all available data and concluded there is no significant tsunami threat to Antigua and Barbuda from the seismic event. However, the Meteorological Service noted a very small possibility of tsunami waves along Atlantic coastlines located nearest to the epicentre.
The Met Service has advised the public that no immediate action is required. Residents are nonetheless encouraged to stay informed by monitoring updates from the Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Service through official channels, including antiguamet.com and social media platforms at @abmetservice on Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and Instagram. ABS Radio and TV will also carry any further updates.
Authorities used the occasion to remind coastal residents to review their tsunami evacuation plans and ensure familiarity with designated safe areas as a general preparedness measure.
The Meteorological Service stated that this is the only bulletin that will be issued for this event unless additional data are received or the situation changes.
