A taxi driver has been granted bail after appearing before a magistrate on five charges stemming from a confrontation with a police officer on Long Street. According to Antigua.news, the incident has drawn significant public attention following the circulation of video footage online.
Denicia Martin, of Bethesda, faces charges of disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, failing to comply with a lawful order, and use of indecent and abusive language — all arising from the March 16 incident.
Martin appeared before Chief Magistrate Ngaio Emanuel, who set bail at $4,500. The court required $1,000 to be paid in cash, with two sureties needed to secure her release.
The bail conditions impose several restrictions on Martin. She must report to the Gray's Farm Police Station three times weekly — on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays — between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. She has also been ordered to surrender any travel documents in her possession.
The video, which appeared to capture the interaction between Martin and a female police officer, spread rapidly on social media and sparked widespread public discussion about the incident.
The case has been adjourned and is set to return to court on May 20.
